Il diabete ruba i bambini
“Il diabete ruba i bambini” è il titolo della nuova campagna della Fondazione Italiana Diabete Onlus firmata Armando Testa. L’agenzia, da sempre sensibile alle campagne sociali, ha realizzato la campagna pro bono per supportare la Fondazione nell’azione di sensibilizzazione dell’opinione pubblica sulla patologia del diabete.
Il diabete e i suoi numeri.
Il diabete (o diabete mellito) è una malattia cronica che deriva dalla carenza nella produzione o nell’utilizzo di insulina, un ormone prodotto dal pancreas che permette di regolare il livello di glucosio nel sangue. I tipi più comuni di diabete sono il diabete di tipo 1 (una malattia autoimmune che non dipende dall’alimentazione o dallo stile di vita e che colpisce prevalentemente i bambini distruggendo le cellule beta del pancreas, l’organo che produce l’insulina; chi ne è affetto non può vivere senza la somministrazione costante di insulina) e il diabete di tipo 2 (tipico dell’età adulta, causato da svariati fattori quali fattori genetici ereditari, cattiva alimentazione, obesità; è caratterizzato da una condizione di iperglicemia costante).
Sono 5.000 in Italia, e 700.000 in Europa, i bambini affetti da diabete di tipo 1 – la forma più grave – e ogni giorno soltanto in Italia si registrano 2 nuovi casi. Considerando l’intera popolazione italiana, sono 120.000 le persone con diabete di tipo 1 e circa 3.5 milioni quelle con diabete di tipo 2. Il diabete rappresenta oggi la quarta causa di morte nel mondo con circa 4 milioni di decessi e oltre 7 milioni di nuovi casi ogni anno.
Secondo valutazioni dell’OMS (Organizzazione Mondiale Sanità), la crescita del diabete è calcolabile intorno al 5-6% all’anno e si stima che entro il 2030 i soggetti affetti da diabete nel mondo saranno oltre 400 milioni. Inoltre, il 50-80% delle persone affette dalla malattia non è consapevole della propria condizione che, soprattutto nel caso dei più piccoli, si manifesta spesso senza alcun visibile preavviso.
La campagna e la Fondazione.
Lo spot video mostra la quotidianità di un bambino, mentre condivide le normali attività con altri coetanei, dalla scuola alla festa di classe, alla piscina. Il piccolo protagonista affronta però l’intera giornata con indosso una maschera da adulto. La maschera sta a significare che il diabete porta con sé responsabilità molto grandi. Chi ne è affetto, per quanto giovanissimo, è perciò costretto a crescere alla svelta. Lo spot si conclude con la madre che accenna a levare al bambino la maschera. La voce fuori campo recita: “Il diabete ruba i bambini. La Fondazione Italiana Diabete sta cercando una cura definitiva”.
La Fondazione Italiana Diabete nasce infatti con l’obiettivo di creare un punto di riferimento in Italia per la ricerca, l’educazione e la cura del diabete mellito. È impegnata in particolare sul diabete di tipo 1, per arrivare a guarire la migliaia di bambini che ne sono colpiti e perché la cura del diabete di tipo 1 può rappresentare un contributo fondamentale anche per i malati del tipo 2.
La Fondazione è stata costituita nel 2009 in collaborazione con l’Ospedale Niguarda Ca’ Granda di Milano e con il Diabetes Research Institute di Miami, diretto dal prof. Camillo Ricordi.
I progetti della Fondazione Italiana Diabete.
Numerosi sono i progetti di ricerca e le attività presentate dalla Fondazione.
Il prof. Ricordi ha presentato il progetto di ricerca, fiore all’occhiello della Fondazione, che intende raccogliere e vincere la sfida di trovare una soluzione definitiva per questa patologia che affligge migliaia di giovani, la cui vita, ancora oggi, dipende da diverse iniezioni quotidiane di insulina. L’obiettivo finale di tale progetto prevede la realizzazione di una serie di tecnologie per la terapia cellulare per la cura del diabete di tipo 1.
Altro progetto che prenderà il via a breve è la costruzione di un nuovo reparto di diabetologia pediatrica presso l’Ospedale Niguarda Ca’ Granda di Milano, che già oggi rappresenta una delle più importanti strutture nazionali per la cura e la ricerca del diabete di tipo 1 in Italia e che ha dato la disponibilità alla Fondazione Italiana Diabete ad accogliere il progetto per fornire assistenza specializzata ai piccoli malati di diabete.
Sul fronte delle pubblicazioni divulgative, è inoltre in lavorazione la prima edizione di un Manuale, che verrà aggiornato ogni anno, contenente la composizione nutrizionale degli alimenti, affinché le persone affette da diabete migliorino la gestione della malattia attraverso la conoscenza e correlazione di alimentazione/terapia insulinica.
